To complete the EDE-EM requirements, a student must have 180 ECTS, with at least 90 ECTS (30 per year) being devoted to the research of the PhD dissertation.The remaining credits are devoted to training and helping the candidate’s career prospects and monitoring the career development once graduated. This includes Language courses, teaching experience, individual mentoring, preparation for professional presentations, preparing vitae and research work for publication, better use of professional software and placement.
The PhD student is required to present a research paper at least 3 times during the Programme: one at each of the 2 degree granting universities, and one at the annual EDE-EM Jamboree. The preparation of the PhD thesis will be carried out at two degree-granting universities. The minimum cumulative stay in each university is two semesters.
Overview of the Study Programme
Based on the long experience in European Doctoral Programmes in economics, the members of the EDE-EM Consortium want to promote research training in economics, to foster the mobility of doctoral candidates, and to strengthen scientific and teaching collaboration among the participating institutions.
The EDE-EM programme is research-oriented and aims to produce top-quality researchers, who will gain international experience working within the research units with some of Europe’s leading economists. Students are trained for positions in academia, at the international level, as well as for responsible positions in government, research organizations, and business enterprises.
All PhD students have a mobility requirement in two “mobility” universities, within the Consortium. Thus, students spend two semesters in each university and are jointly supervised by two advisers from the mobility universities, with a single defense at the end of a student’s studies. After successful completion of the program, the student will be awarded the “European Doctorate in Economics – Erasmus Mundus.” This is a joint degree, which is officially recognized as a national doctorate from the two mobility universities. This joint degree is agreed upon by four universities in the Consortium. As for the other partner universities, the student is awarded a double degree, which consists of two independent degrees awarded by the mobility universities.
Language of Instruction
All the scientific courses in the EDE-EM Study Programme are taught in English.
In order to promote the integration of students and the European cultural diversity, each university provides courses of one or two European languages spoken in the countries involved in the EDE-EM programme. These courses are mandatory in the training program of the students and they count as of 2 ECTS per semester, with a Pass/Fail grading system.
The EDE-EM Consortium will offer the possibility for the PhD student to take an exam for a nationwide certificate of proficiency in the languages that they have studied. Due to the mobility, all students will be trained in at least two European languages.
The students having successfully carried out the Study Programme will be awarded a joint doctorate degree and a diploma supplement. The joint doctorate degree, entitled “European Doctorate in Economics – Erasmus Mundus”, is officially recognized as a doctorate degree by the partner institutions, with the same rights and duties as their national degrees. For the institutions of the Consortium that could not deliver the joint degree due to regulatory reasons, the student will receive a double degree. This double degree consists of two independent degrees awarded by the two universities in which the PhD student has studied under a co-tutelle agreement. The institutions that currently cannot offer the joint degree have made offering the joint degree a top priority and have set the goal of being able to offer a joint degree by the time the first cohort of students is graduating.
Each degree is fully recognized in the country in which it has been issued. The diploma supplement will describe the overall organization of the EDE-EM Programme, the added value it brings to the student, and the details on the student’s study program.
